  1. Place the bacon in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat until crisp.
  2. Add onion and continue cooking and stirring until softened, for a further 5 minutes.
  3. Remove cooked bacon, fat, and onions from the pan and transfer to a slow cooker.
  4. Add crushed red pepper, peas, then pour in 4 cups (1 L) water and stir well to combine.
  5. Cover the pot and cook on low-heat setting for 3-4 hours or until peas are tender.
  6. Stir in uncooked long-grain rice. Season with salt. Cover the pot and continue cooking until rice is tender and absorbed all liquid, for about 1-1½ hours.
  7. Sprinkle with chopped green onions.
  8. Serve hot
